Illinois TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)

Last updated: June 13, 2026

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) provides temporary financial assistance to pregnant women and families with one or more dependent children. In Illinois, TANF helps pay for food, shelter, utilities, and other non-medical needs, and is administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS).

What does it cover?

TANF provides time-limited cash assistance for basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing, delivered through the Illinois Link Card. It also connects families with transitional services to help them become independent — including GED preparation, vocational training, postsecondary education, English classes, child care help, work stipends, and job retention services. Families receiving TANF may also qualify for Medical Assistance and SNAP.

Who is eligible?

To qualify, you must be pregnant or have a child under age 19 living with you (an 18-year-old must be a full-time high school student), live in Illinois (you can qualify even if homeless), be a U.S. citizen or meet certain immigration requirements, and develop and follow a plan for becoming self-sufficient. A pregnant woman may qualify even without other children.

How to apply

You can apply online through ABE (Application for Benefits Eligibility) or in person at the local Family Community Resource Center serving your area. If determined eligible, you receive cash and SNAP benefits through the Illinois Link Card. Use the DHS Office Locator or call the DHS Help Line at 1-800-843-6154.
