Illinois SNAP Benefits

Last updated: June 13, 2026

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly Food Stamps, helps low-income Illinois residents buy food. Benefits are provided on the Illinois Link Card, an electronic card accepted at most grocery stores, and the program is administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS).

How much can you get?

The monthly SNAP benefit depends on your household size and income. After IDHS subtracts allowable deductions such as rent and utilities from your gross income, your benefit is calculated against the federal maximum for your household size. The exact maximum amounts are published in the IDHS SNAP Income and Benefit Amounts chart (form DHS 124). Your benefit may be lower depending on your income.

Who is eligible?

Most low-income Illinois households can qualify. Eligibility depends mainly on income, expenses, and the number of people who live and eat together. As of October 1, 2025, the gross monthly income limit (165% of the federal poverty level) is $2,152 for one person and $4,421 for a household of four. Households that include someone age 60 or older or a person with a disability use a higher limit (200% FPL). You can use the IDHS SNAP Eligibility Calculator for an estimate.

How to apply

You can apply online through ABE (Application for Benefits Eligibility) or in person at your local Family Community Resource Center. Emergency SNAP benefits may be available within five days. If eligible, you will receive an Illinois Link Card. For help, call the IDHS Help Line at 1-800-843-6154.
