Illinois Medicaid (Medical Assistance)

Last updated: June 13, 2026

Illinois Medicaid, known as Medical Assistance, provides health coverage to more than three million Illinoisans through programs administered by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS). Covered services typically include doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, mental health and substance use treatment, and more.

What does it cover?

Most people who enroll receive comprehensive coverage, including doctor and dental visits, well-child care, immunizations, mental health and substance abuse services, hospital and emergency care, prescription drugs, and medical equipment. Some specialized programs cover a more limited set of services.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility varies by program and is based mainly on income. Under the Affordable Care Act, adults age 19-64 with income up to 138% of the federal poverty level (about $1,366/month for an individual or $1,845/month for a couple) can qualify. The Aid to the Aged, Blind, or Disabled (AABD) program covers seniors and people who are blind or have disabilities with income up to 100% FPL and limited resources. Other pathways cover former foster youth, pregnant individuals, and people who are working with disabilities.
