Pennsylvania CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program)
Last updated: June 13, 2026
The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is Pennsylvania's program to provide health coverage to uninsured children and teens who are not eligible for or enrolled in Medicaid (Medical Assistance). CHIP helps families whose children might otherwise go without coverage.
What does CHIP cover?
CHIP offers comprehensive health coverage for uninsured children and teens, including doctor visits, prescriptions, dental and vision care, immunizations, and more. Depending on family income, coverage may be free, low-cost, or at full cost, so families at a range of income levels can find a plan.
Who is eligible?
CHIP is available to children and teens who are Pennsylvania residents, are uninsured, and are not eligible for or enrolled in Medicaid. There is no income limit that excludes a child from CHIP — families who earn too much for Medicaid may still qualify for free, low-cost, or full-cost CHIP coverage based on income. If your child is found eligible for Medicaid during the application, they will be enrolled there instead.
How to apply
You can apply for CHIP online, and the same application screens children for both Medicaid and CHIP so they are routed to the right program. Visit the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services CHIP resources to learn about coverage, check eligibility, apply, or renew.
