Work First is North Carolina's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. It provides parents with short-term cash assistance, training, and other services to help them become employed and move toward self-sufficiency.
What does Work First offer?
Work First emphasizes three strategies: Diversion, Work, and Retention. Beyond cash assistance, families may receive Benefit Diversion, Emergency Assistance, employment services, and supportive services like transportation, child care, and short-term training. Many of these services are available to families with income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
Who is eligible and what are the limits?
Work First serves low-income families with children, as well as relatives and legal guardians caring for children. To receive Work First Family Assistance, parents sign a Mutual Responsibility Agreement and must meet work requirements. Families can generally receive benefits for up to 24 months at a time, with a federal 60-month cumulative lifetime limit.
How to apply
You can apply in person at your local county Department of Social Services, or apply online and check your application status through the ePASS website. Families leaving Work First for employment may receive a job bonus payment for up to three months.
