Michigan's Family Independence Program (FIP) is the state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. It provides temporary cash assistance for eligible pregnant women and low-income families with minor children.

What is the Family Independence Program?

FIP provides temporary monthly cash assistance to help families meet basic needs while working toward self-sufficiency. Benefits are accessed through the Michigan Bridge Card. As of 2025, the maximum number of months an adult can receive FIP increased from 48 to 60 months, and the program is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

Who is eligible?

FIP is available to eligible pregnant women and low-income families with minor children who meet income and other program requirements. Children must be part of your family and meet age requirements. Applicants participate in PATH (Partnership. Accountability. Training. Hope.), a work participation program that includes a 21-day assessment to identify and address barriers to employment.

You can apply online through MI Bridges (Michigan.gov/MIBridges), download and print a paper application, or contact or visit your local MDHHS office. Michigan also offers State Disability Assistance (SDA) for eligible disabled adults.
