Chase Freedom Flex
Every reward and perk below is checked against Chase's own product page, dated, and never shaped by affiliate revenue. We take no commissions, so the math has no reason to flatter the card.
Benefit data is extracted from Chase's own published pages by our automated pipeline; all line items trace to the Chase Freedom Flex product page (creditcards.chase.com/cash-back-credit-cards/freedom/flex). Dates reflect pipeline runs, not same-day human checks. By O.B., Founder.
There's no annual fee, so the Freedom Flex never costs you anything to hold โ the real question is how much cash back you'll actually earn. The headline is the rotating 5% category (up to $1,500 in combined spend each quarter, then 1%, and you must activate it every quarter), plus fixed bonus rates on travel, dining, and drugstores. Here's the honest math for three kinds of cardholder.
If you activate the 5% bonus every quarter and max the $1,500 cap each time, that's $1,500 × 5% × 4 quarters = $300 a year from rotating categories alone. Add steady spend at 3% on dining and 3% at drugstores, plus 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel, and a heavy, organized user can clear well past $400/year in cash back โ on a card that costs $0 to hold.
Activates every quarter and maxes the cap: $300+/year from rotating categories alone.
Most people don't max $1,500 in every category every quarter. A realistic user who activates most quarters and spends moderately in the bonus categories โ say $2,000โ$4,000 a year captured at 5%, plus regular 3% dining and drugstore spend โ lands somewhere around $150โ$250 in annual cash back. Because the fee is $0, every dollar of that is pure upside.
Realistic activator: roughly $150โ$250/year in cash back, all of it profit on a no-fee card.
The Freedom Flex has one true catch: the 5% rotating bonus does nothing unless you activate it each quarter. If you never activate, those purchases earn just 1% โ and the card quietly becomes an ordinary 1% card with 3% dining and drugstores. You still lose nothing (there's no fee), but you leave most of the headline value on the table.
If you know you won't log in to activate every quarter, a flat-rate card that pays the same on everything with zero effort may simply fit your life better.
Never activates the bonus: most of the 5% value is forfeited โ though the card still costs $0.

Rotating 5% categories change each quarter and must be activated. The $1,500 cap is combined across the quarter's bonus categories; spend above the cap earns 1%.
These come with the card but carry no fixed dollar value, so they're not in the cash-back math above. Each still links to Chase's own page.

We take no affiliate commissions and link to no application offers, so nothing on this page is shaped by what pays us โ because nothing does.
